(HealthDay News) -- Hamstring injuries, most often affecting sprinters and others who run, can be painful and take a long time to heal.

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons says risk factors for hamstring injury include:

  • Having tight muscles that aren't properly stretched.
  • Having a muscle imbalance, for example, the quadriceps being stronger than the hamstrings, leading to faster fatigue of the hamstrings.
  • Having weak, poorly conditioned muscles.
  • Being a dancer, sprinter, runner, athlete, a child or teen, or an elderly person.
