And help prevent injury

(HealthDay News) -- By age 5, children begin to realize just how many activities they can participate in. But with many of these newly discovered pursuits comes the danger of injury.

So the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends you teach your child:

  • Basic bike safety, from wearing a helmet to not riding in the street.
  • Street safety. Show a child where it is safe to walk and where to avoid.
  • Swimming and water safety, including rules barring swimming without an adult nearby, and never playing near water.
  • Car safety, including always wearing a seat belt and being properly restrained in a car seat or booster seat.
  • Firearm safety, including a firm rule that children should never touch a firearm. All firearms should be securely locked and stored out of a child's reach.
