The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons explains these possible causes:

  • A strained muscle or joint.
  • A condition called rounded back caused by wedged vertebrae.
  • A stress fracture affecting the spine.
  • A slipped vertebrae.
  • An infection in the space between the vertebrae.
  • Rarely, a tumor of the spine.
