For many parts of the US, autumn brings cooler temperatures, colorful leaves, and the return of favorite seasonal activities (and coffee drinks). But for those living with asthma, fall can also bring an increased risk of coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and asthma attacks. Several seasonal changes can make asthma more difficult to manage during the autumn months. The good news is that understanding these triggers and taking a few preventive steps may help reduce the likelihood of flare-ups and keep symptoms under better control.
Why do symptoms increase in the fall?
Asthma is a chronic condition that causes inflammation and narrowing of the airways. When a person encounters a trigger, the airways can become even more inflamed, making breathing difficult. Autumn creates the perfect combination of environmental factors that can increase exposure to many common asthma triggers.
One of the biggest contributors to fall asthma symptoms is seasonal allergies. While many people associate allergies with spring pollen, autumn brings its own set of allergens. As one example, Ragweed pollen is among the most common fall allergy triggers. A single ragweed plant can release millions of pollen grains into the air, where they can travel for miles. People who are sensitive to ragweed may experience allergy symptoms that can worsen asthma, including congestion, sneezing, and airway irritation.
Mold is another common culprit. Falling leaves create damp environments where mold thrives. Raking leaves, gardening, or spending time outdoors near piles of wet vegetation can increase exposure to mold spores that may trigger asthma symptoms.
Colder air irritates the airways
As temperatures begin to drop, cooler air can become another challenge for people with asthma. Breathing in cold, dry air may irritate already sensitive airways, causing them to tighten. This can lead to coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath, especially during outdoor exercise or physical activity. Some people notice symptoms while taking a brisk walk on a chilly morning, while others experience difficulty during activities such as jogging, hiking, or playing outdoor sports.

Autumn also marks the beginning of cold and flu season. Respiratory infections are among the most common triggers of asthma attacks. Even a mild cold can cause airway inflammation that makes asthma symptoms harder to control.
Children are particularly vulnerable because they spend more time in school environments where viruses can spread quickly. Adults may also find that workplace exposures and increased indoor gatherings during colder weather contribute to a greater risk of illness.
What might help reduce fall asthma flare-ups?
While it may not be possible to avoid every trigger, there are several actions that may help reduce symptoms and lower the risk of an asthma attack. For example, keeping track of local pollen and mold counts can help people plan outdoor activities. On days when counts are high, limiting time outside or keeping windows closed may help reduce exposure. If outdoor yard work is necessary, wearing a mask and showering afterward may help remove pollen and mold spores from the skin and hair.
Covering the nose and mouth with a scarf during cold weather can help warm and humidify the air before it reaches the lungs. This simple step may reduce irritation caused by cold, dry air. It can also be helpful to allow more time for warm-up exercises before participating in outdoor physical activities.
Stay on top of asthma management
Autumn is a good time to review an asthma action plan with a healthcare provider. Taking prescribed controller medications consistently and ensuring rescue inhalers are easily accessible can help maintain better symptom control. If symptoms seem to be increasing, it is important to discuss concerns with a healthcare professional before a severe flare-up occurs.
Lastly, there are a few simple household measures may help improve indoor air quality:
- Replace heating and air-conditioning filters regularly
- Vacuum and dust frequently
- Control moisture to discourage mold growth
- Wash bedding in hot water to reduce dust mites
- Keep pets out of sleeping areas if pet allergies are a concern
Every person's asthma is different, so paying attention to individual triggers and working closely with a healthcare provider is important. With the right approach, fall can be a season of colorful leaves, crisp air, and outdoor enjoyment rather than increased asthma symptoms.
